Google Fi's Predatory "Double-Dip" Penalty Ignored Family Medical Hardship and Corporate Merger

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full

  • - Removed $91 credit and added a $900 penalty after an 8-day billing issue.
  • - Hardship hold was refused, and we plan to port out to T-Mobile.
Google Fi's Predatory Double-Dip Penalty Ignored Family Medical Hardship and Corporate...
Updated by user Mar 05, 2026

The only advice is to stay away! They will find any way to create a higher bill then what you signed for. They give 2 days grace before disconnecting service causing a downline stream of rescinded credits.

Original review Feb 18, 2026
Do not trust Google Fi's promotional offers. Our family is being targeted by a predatory $900 'claw-back' penalty and a $91 monthly credit removal for an 8-day billing blip caused by a documented medical emergency and a corporate merger pay gap.

I proactively contacted Google Fi support one week before the payment date to notify them of a 4-week income gap due to a merger and a medical emergency for minor children hours from my residence. They refused a hardship hold. After an 8-day suspension, we paid the balance in full on 01/22/2026. Google Fi's response?

They hit us with a 'Double Penalty': They removed our $91 monthly credit. They added a $900 lump-sum 'device promo' penalty to our bill. Deceptively, their chat agents only mentioned the $91 credit loss and hid the $900 penalty until it was already charged. This lack of transparency and refusal to acknowledge documented hardship is a 'Truth in Billing' nightmare.

They are now threatening to destroy an 18-year-old's perfect 2-year credit history over a penalty that was never clearly disclosed. We are porting out to T-Mobile.

Google Fi is an automated robot with zero human empathy. If you value your credit and your sanity, stay away.
Loss:
$3000
Pros:
  • International roaming
  • No contract
  • Real-time usage review
Cons:
  • Promo trap
  • Unstable connection
  • No human discretion

Preferred solution: device balance; keep monthly payments on phones. 2. Waive $900 & $91 promo penalties. 3. No negative credit reporting during FCC/TX AG investigation. I cured debt 1/22 & porting in good faith. Remove all penalties.

User's recommendation: DO not even consider Google Fi, they shut you off after 2 days and use verbatim robotic scripting without any review or care for the consumer.

Resolved: Waiting for 5 days already to reactivate Google Fi account.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - Card was disengaged from Google Fi, blocking service.
  • - Reactivation attempts show 'couldn't reactivate service' errors for 5 days with little feedback.
Updated by user Feb 25, 2026

Google Fi took 6 days to reactivate my account. The service was initially interrupted by my mistaken removal of the credit card tied to my account.

I corrected that and added the credit card again just minutes after removing it. Google did nothing for nearly a week and correspondence amounted to infrequent emails assuring me that solution was in the works.

Original review Feb 24, 2026

Mistakenly disengaged my credit card from Google Fi. Fi connection was immediately blocked.

Reengaged the credit card to the account quickly and repeatedly received 'couldn't reactivate service' notice each time I attempted to reactivate the account. This has been going on for 5 days with little feedback and no resolution from Google Support.

Cons:
  • Lousy support

Preferred solution: Resolution of the problem and use of my phone again. I have had no cell service for 5 days.

  • - I was charged monthly for Fi though not activated.
  • - I was told the unused SIM could be returned.

Never get Google Fi. Anytime one has an issue with Google, it will not be solved until you add another payment method.

Original review Feb 28, 2026

I was going to get Fi but after receiving sim card I read the terms and it was going to be more money for me so I didn't do it. I called them to return som card and they said if I didn't use it no worries.

I never activated Fi but they charged me every month like I did. I called customer service not once but several times. I offered them the sim. They didn't want it.

They could see I never activated it yet continued to charge me. I had to do a bunch of stuff like show them a bank statement

Cons:
  • To this day they say i still owe them

Preferred solution: I just want it off my Google account that I owe them

Resolved: Setting up replacement device, no screen on old phone

Updated by user Dec 30, 2025

Company fixed the issue and I have been provided with product or service ordered. some information from extensive web searches/ llm.

then just tried different things. sub-optimal but back up and running. in general it appears that companies are cutting way back on support. the fallback options include LLMs and "user" sites.

if you are lucky you find enough tidbits of useful info to stitch together a solution. good luck.

Tried to get a person on the phone for an unusual support issue, and none of the menu items are even close. Could not find the place to speak to a person or even an intelligent bot.

Pros:
  • Great service overall
Cons:

  • - Hector helped resolve issues and called back twice; he was patient.
  • - Ongoing call/notification failures from Fi; I plan to switch after this trip.

Hector was very helpful and resolved the current problems as best as he was able given the technological glitches at Google Fi. He even called me back twice to check the system.

He is very knowledgeable and patient. On the other hand, I have experienced failures in incoming calls and notifications for a month, due to Google Fi's failure to switch my telephone/data service to the local services available in the country I arrived in one month ago. This used to happen automatically. I would like to warn new customers that I no longer recoommend Google Fi.

It used to be great, but about two years ago, the phone services got significantly worse for the money and the access to a live help line with a real person got significantly more difficult. I will change to another phone service after this trip.

Loss:
$90
Pros:
  • International travel does work without changing sim card
Cons:
  • Lots of glitches in the last two years
  • Much harder to access help

Preferred solution: Price reduction

User's recommendation: Pick a different phone company

Don't deal with them

Original review Jan 30, 2026
I purchased 2 phones and Google Fi plan
At the end of July 2025 with the promo.
My credit card was charged $231.00 dollars at the start then a couple of months later I called and questioned my charges being $179.00 per month.I understood that I was to get bill credits but that never happened. That made getting the phones and Google Fi an attractive offer.I would have never done this if that was going to happen.I was told that my account paused. My email account was changed by Google to one that I didn't ever have.I don't know if that was the reason for the pause.I live on social security and this takes up 10% of my monthly income.Since then I have cancelled Google Fi and using another provider.I will never do business with Google Fi
